Ed, I always have enjoyed and admired Margaret....our mom's were dedicated to Scouting; and Mrs. S. was so delightful, which she must have passed down.  I'm so glad I got to see Margaret at the last reunion, and of course both of you.  Her passing is a real loss to Fort Wayne....Julie Waterfield

She was the best. And better than that.   I had a stroke several months after she passed.  And sadly, the "clean up" crew that went through my house wiped out most references to her or the funeral so I could not go back and thank all of the people who came to the funeral or who donated to the Girl Scouts and Red Cross in her name.  If you are one of those people, I am so sorry.  One quick story though.  In college, we took a class together in physical chemistry, a lot of math and physics.  The exams were oral and gruff, she almost always was forced to cry by an exceptionally brutal committee.  Later, she became the CSI fort the Fort Wayne police department.  Her testimony put hundreds of drug dealers in prison and she was pursued mercilessly by lawyers and bad guys.  Her comment was, that being on the witness stand was never as bad as Shmitt-Bleek, the professor who had terrorized her in that course.  Oddly, at the funeral, and while she had not been to church for five years because of physical disabilities, our church got a new minister, a former undercover officer while she was head of the crime lab.  His comment at the funeral went like this..  Most of the time when he testified in court, they would specify her testimony because they knew they could not win if she took the stand!!  And funny, several very angry and dangerous former prisoners showed up on our porch over the years, But afteer talking to her, they always went away and never returned.  Her smile and honesty was her bond and strength,  People liked her.  And I cry a lot, and sometimes worse.  Miss her bunches.  I had a very mild case of polio as a kid, and an always fatal disease called Bright's disease.  The invention of sulfa saved my life but my kidneys were severely damaged.  Doctor told me I would not live past age ten.. Got me out of Vietnam, thought about not having kids, diuretics saved my life.  But I really did not see this outcome,,I used to fly experimental airplanes (without a license ) because I didn't want to die in bed like the brother of a certain former classmate, initials CM, class of 65.

I wanted to share a story about Margaret's passing that meant a lot to me. Nine years ago, Margaret reached out to me with questions about our 50th Reunion. She was interested in attending, but because she was in a wheelchair, she needed to know if our house was accessible. She had concerns about navigating the steps, getting from the car to the house, and moving around the different levels. Joe McKibben, who was on the Reunion Committee, offered to build ramps to ensure that Margaret would have easy access to all areas of our home. His willingness to go out of his way for a fellow classmate was truly heartwarming. When Margaret passed away, I was grateful that we had made the effort to accommodate her at our reunion. As we approach our 60th reunion, this story feels especially relevant.

I also want to take a moment to share that Joe McKibben is currently battling a serious illness. He spent over 90 days in the hospital earlier this year and though he initially started recovering, his condition has since worsened. He has begun a new treatment and would greatly appreciate any words of encouragement. If you would like to reach out to him, you can send a confidential message through Joe's Profile Page, or connect with him on Facebook or Messenger.

I know it might seem unusual to share this in this context, but I believe Margaret would have been okay with it. Thank you for your understanding.

It was a PhosphorusRadon-nIodineVanatiumArgon-rLithium-iSilverEinstineium-s for me to have had Margaret as a chemistry student and for my kids to have had her as a chemistry teacher at IPFW. I also had Ed, John and Jennifer as chemistry students at South Side.
