In Memory

Barbara L. Ross (Firestone)

Barbara L. Ross (Firestone)

Barbara L. Firestone, 73, of Noblesville, passed away on July 22, 2019 at Hamilton Trace in Fishers, Indiana. She was born on April 3, 1946 to the late Wilbur and Martha (Homsher) Ross in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Barb was a 1964 graduate of South Side High School in Fort Wayne. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Ball State University in 1968 and her master’s degree in 1970 from IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne).

Barb was a passionate and dedicated teacher for more than 25 years. She began her career with Fort Wayne Community Schools teaching first and second grades. She spent the next several years as a stay at home mom, devoting herself to raising her children. She eventually returned to the classroom and finished her career as a third grade teacher at St. Monica School in Indianapolis.

While she loved her years as a teacher, her primary focus has always been her family. Barb rarely missed a school or sporting event for any of her children or grandchildren. She also had an appreciation for art and was a collector of pottery, stained glass, baskets and unique wall pieces.

Barb is survived by her husband of 51 years, Jerry Firestone; daughter, Angela (Craig) Koven; son, Mark (Sierra) Firestone; sister, Linda Thurman; and grandsons, Grant and Blake Koven.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 31 from 4-8 pm at Randall & Roberts Funeral Center, 1685 Westfield Road, in Noblesville. Visitation hours will briefly pause at 6:00 pm for a time of prayer and a celebration of her life.

Memorial contributions may be made to Teachers’ Treasures, 1800 East 10th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46201; or at teacherstreasures.org

Barb and I were really close in high school. She was a girl from my own neighborhood and we sat right next to each other for four years in Mr. Polite's home room.My husband John and I use to double date with Barb and her future husband Jerry. As young marrieds we went back and forth to each other's houses playing cards and doing things together with our young kids.Barb and Jerry moved to Noblesville many years ago and Barb taught elementary school for over 25 years. We kept in touch thru cards and letters and later Facebook.Barb's daughter is now a school teacher in the Noblesville area.Barb retired a few years ago and had been battling cancer for the past year or so.She took a bad fall at home and broke her hip a few months ago and never quite recovered after that. Barb was a sweet girl always a quick smile and a laugh. We had some great times together and I will miss her dearly.

I have many fond/fun memories of Barb during our high school years! Nothing beat buzzing through Halls Drive-in seeing who was there, heading to basketball and football games. She will be missed. Condolences to her family and many friends!!!

So sad to hear that Barb has passed away.  She was a lovely person with a warm smile.  I remember going to SSHS basketball and football games with her and the girls on Friday nights.  Barb had a quiet personality, but she was always a good person to talk to as she had a no-nonsense, practical way of looking at a situation..  Jerry was the love of her life and my prayers are with him and her family during this very difficult time.  It is truly sad to lose those we grew up with and spent time with in our youth.
