Tom Meyers

Thanks again to Charlie Golden for making sure that we have Tom's obituary.  Please take the time to read it as it is very informative about Tom's life after SSHS.  It was so nice to see that classic Tom Meyers Smile once again!

OBITUARY

Thomas Robert Meyers

APRIL 11, 1946 – OCTOBER 26, 2022

Obituary of Thomas Robert Meyers

IN THE CARE OF

Blake-Lamb Funeral Home

Thomas Robert Meyers passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 with his loving partner, Barbara Brooks at his side. He was 76 years old.

Tom was born in Ft Wayne, Indiana on April 11, 1946 to the late Robert and Dorothy Meyers. He was raised in a large loving family with his siblings, Bonnie (Mike) Albers, Rob (Gayle) Meyers, and the late Susie (Nick) Meyers Maniates. His cousin and dear friend, Charles (Susan) Golden lived down the street. He played basketball for South Side High School, which, along with cars, was a lifelong love for Tom.

Tom went to Valparaiso University and was a Phi Delta Theta. He majored in accounting and was hired by Arthur Andersen after college, moving to Chicago. He met and married Ann McCracken (June 24, 1972), and they had one daughter, Amy (Ian) Wickman. He and Ann lived in the same condominium building (James House) through her death in 2002 and his recent passing. Their early years were spent auto-racing on the weekends, where Tom drove his Formula Ford, his brother and Dad were his pit crew, and Ann and Amy were along for the fun. Every summer was also spent with the Green Lake group, close friends all originally from Arthur Andersen (Bean, Dorr, Eiler, and Johnson families).

Tom spent the majority of his life working as a commodities trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He eventually went back to accounting as well. He enjoyed playing basketball with his brother Rob and going annually to the Chicago Auto Show together. He loved running in Lincoln Park and watching his daughter’s rowing regattas while she was at Brown University.

Ultimately the family man, Tom took care of his parents, his wife, his mother-in-law and a neighbor during their illnesses and subsequent deaths. He approached life with a fearless attitude and tried to infuse fun into most events. His life long motto, “Eat Dessert First” not only expressed his love of chocolate and all things sweet, but his attitude to put the good parts first in life.

Tom used this attitude in approaching all things, even his diagnosis of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) in 2001. He went many years without sharing this news, until eventually he underwent a living donor liver transplant, donated by his son-in-law, Ian, on April 17, 2013. His loving partner, Barbara, was essential in his extended and often difficult recovery. She was always by his side.

Tom enjoyed going to the Bears, Bulls, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Barbara, going to the yearly Indianapolis 500 (a lifelong Meyers tradition), spending time with their extended families at Christmas, and riding the tractor in Iowa. He enjoyed taking photos (of which he was in very few) and traveling, including Mt Kilimanjaro with Amy and Ian on his 60th birthday. He was always game for a good road trip, no matter the distance. He and Barbara drove to the Arctic Circle, spotting local moose and musk ox herds, and stopping at the most northern US truck stop. GrandTom also enjoyed spending time and having fun with his grandchildren, Ella and Avery.

Tom is survived by his partner Barbara, his daughter and son-in-law Amy and Ian Wickman, his grandchildren Ella and Avery, and his siblings Rob Meyers and Bonnie Albers. Memorial services will be held at Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 E Chestnut Street, Chicago on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 11:30 am with reception to immediately follow in Anderson Hall. Coincidentally, the church will also have a Tower Brass Concert at 5 pm that day only fitting with Tom’s love of music. It is free and all are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Brain Support Network, Chicago Jesuit Academy, or PSC Partners Seeking a Cure

We received this message today from Charlie Golden:

"Tom Meyers, our classmate, and my best friend passed away peacefully yesterday, October 26, at his home in Chicago. More information will be provided when available. "

This is especially sad to hear because Tom was part of our Indian Village crowd who grew up together; many many fond memories of those early years.  Tom was also my accountant for the 50th Reunion and was of great assistance at that time.  And, of course, many of you will remember Tom from his Basketball years at SSHS.  You couldn't meet a nicer guy!  We will post more information as soon as it is available

Speaking for basketball players who played with Tom for four years at SSHS, it was clear he truly loved the game of basketball.  He was a good player and teammate.  It was clear to those who knew him well that he was a better person!  A number of years ago, the '64 team got together and renewed our friendships and shared stories. It was like we never left SS. Tom was a big part of our lives and we are all better for it!

So sorry to hear of Tom's passing.  My early memories of Tom are that he was a real go-getter. The Indian Village group may remember that he delivered your newspaper and  that when you heard the bells of the ice cream cart you knew it was Tom pedaling the cart all over with ice cream treats.  Especially at Pocahontas. He was always a friend to all he met.  Rest on peace my friend.

So sorry to hear of Tom's passing. As one of the Indian Village crowd I remember him well...Cheryl Scott brought on of my favorite memories of Tom riding that bicycle with the icream freezer in the front. And yes he always made a stop at Pocahontas. Enjoyed working with him on the 50th too...he will be missed. My condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear the loss of an other classmate in the year 2022. I was in several classes with Tom at Harrison Hill Elementary School and South Side H.S. It is my understanding that his Celebration of Life is 12/17/22 in Chicago. I heard this info from his sister Bonnie who is seeing a friend of mind. May Tom Rest in Peace and God Speed.

Tom and I didn't really keep up with each other after graduation, but I last saw him at our BBall reunion a number of years back. He was a good player and a good man. I am pleased to have known him and pleased to have played with him. I do remember Tom had a "50's something" Dodge or Desoto sedan. I remember after returning home from away games late at night in zero weather we would hang around to make sure Tom could get the old beast started. Rumor has it that Tom borrowed spirits from his Dad's liquor cabinet to pour in the radiator for antifreeze to keep the engine from freezing. I'm sure Charlie knows more about that. Coincidentally, his wife Ann McCracken, my wife Kathy Klas, and Don Hilsmier's wife Judy Boyd were sorority sisters at Hanover College. Small world! Rest in peace Tom, you are in a better place!

Don Hilsmier's comment about getting together with old friends. teammates, etc. reminded me of how glad I was that - about 10 years ago - I'd reached out to a couple of my '63 class friends that I'd known since kindergarten at South Wayne Elementary.  Knowing that I'd be in Fort Wayne for a brief visit. we reconnected online and then over breakfast in New Haven. They were both gone a year later....  Our opportunities for such mini-reunions are fading; reach out/renew while you can.

Sadd passing. Tom was a clss guy always. Fond memory of he and I "drag racing" our beater cars behind Quimby Village one night. He had a '51 (or so) DeSoto and I had a '52 Plymouth Cranbrook. Neither was a real burner but we had a fun time trying to best each other. Always a smile on his face. He'll be missed. RIP, Tom.

So sad to hear about Tom. Many Indian Village memories..one I remember is following the mosquito fogger truck on our bikes and Tom's dad saw us and read us the "riot act"..Tom's ice cream truck..his basketball skills..for whatever reason I thought I would count how many times he would run from one end of the court to the other..(don't ask). Tom, Ned and my brother Steve worked together in Chicago and were good friends. Sad 😢
