Ginny and I lived one street apart off Calhoun Street and were friends in junior high and high school. Ginny's maiden name was Ginny Erwin. She had beautiful red hair and was a fantastic dancer. I remember she taught me many of my "fast dance moves," but I could never dance as good as she could. Ginny's older sister moved to California sometime in the early 70's and it wasn't long before Ginny and her whole family had relocated to the San Bernadino area. Ginny married a guy she met in Fort Wayne named Bob Burgess right before leaving for California. Ginny and Bob raised a son in California. I last saw Ginny while on a business trip to Los Angeles in the early 80's. We met for lunch at Marina Del Rey. I wanted to go to a California beach and see the surfers, so we brought our bathing suits and spent the afternoon at Huntington Beach. It was so much fun to lie on the sand and catch up on our lives. I had not realized how far Ginny had to travel to see me in Marina Del Rey. She was living in Redlands, CA at the time, inland and near the mountains. I had not seen her in such a long time and it was wonderful to rekindle a friendship that had been in my life for so long even though we had drifted apart when she moved to California. I don't recall when, but maybe a couple years after that last meeting with Ginny, I heard that she had died of breast cancer. That would have been in the mid to late-80's. I often think of her and the great times we had in our youth. She was a very good friend and treated others with respect, honesty and loyalty. I lived in southern California in the 90's and occasionally found myself in the Redlands area. Tears would come to my eyes whenever I passed through there, remembering Ginny and the good times we had in Fort Wayne and at South Side.
