We recently received this email from Gary's sister, in response to Wanda Ripple's posting of June, 2012:

Hi! I am Gary's youngest sister. He is indeed the right person. Gary became a musician while still in high school, and went into the Navy. He later persued a career in music, and on Feb. 19, 1968, just 10 days after his 22nd birthday, he and the drummer of his band, David Zimmerman, were gunned down after performing in East Dubuque, IL. Those were some of the most agonizing days of our family's life! If you would like more info, I can probably try to find his obit, and make a copy for you. We have a whole scrapbook album about the murders and trial of the animal who killed him and Dave. Let me know if you want to discus this. By the way, Sept. 29 is my 40 year SS class reunion, and it was just a fluke that I looked up Gary's name on Facebook and found this post. Thank you for wanting to acknowledge him and/or his passing!

It saddens me that we have no information about Gary, neither his personal entry nor his obituary . I seem to remember that he lived somewhere near McMillan Park. He went to John S. Irwin and then on to James H. Smart Jr. High, and he was half a grade behind us mid-termers.
I have searched the internet to see if I can locate anything about him and find only that a Gary Blauvelt, musician, age 22,was shot to death in 1968. I was not aware that Gary was a musician, but the age matches. If I can find more definitive information to confirm that this person is our Gary Blauvelt, I will post it.

So sorry to hear about Gary's passing. I went to Smart School and also graduated in 1964 from South Side. I was just looking at the old memories today and saw this. Prayers for the family. So sad
