Jim, Shame on me for not checking our website sooner. I too remember Dick...we had classes together several times. I hope all of us have friends in our lives just as Dick and his family have had with you and yours. Thank you for sharing with all of us. May he rest in peace. Jenny (Hammerstein) Sorg

Jim, I really appreciate that you finally located Dick after months of searching. Even though he is gone as of this writing, I feel we made a connection in these last few weeks. Dick truely was a kind and gentle person. I'm sure he will be missed by his family and friends. I am just sitting here remembering all the good times. Please keep in touch and I will see you on my next trip to Wilmington.

Jim, You've shown yourself to be a good friend. I admired that so much in a person. Your description of Dick and your friendship inspired me. My thoughts are with Dick's family. Sue Smith Terry

Ned, Thank you so much for your response. I just talked with Dick's wife Sharon and she informed me that he passed away today at 6:15 AM while still sleeping. He will be cremated and there will be no funeral, only a private family service this Saturday. Sharon is going to have an obituary in the Ft. Wayne papers. He fought a valiant, ten month battle and his suffering is over and he is in a better place. I ask only that those who knew Dick as a friend keep his family in their prayers. Thanks again Ned, Jim Ridlen

Hi Nancee, I just received an OK to proceed with an appropriate announcement concerning Dick Wiebke's condition. In her OK,his wife, Sharon Rhoades, told me today is their wedding anniversary. Dick and Sharon visited his son Matt, a commercial pilot based out of Charlotte,NC and living at Lake Wylie,SC, then spent a weekend with my wife and me at our home on Lake Murray,SC just 5 weeks ago.In spite of chemo and radiation he looked great ...just tired. (Poor guy was diagnosed with stage 3A lung cancer just weeks after retiring.) A scant few days after they returned home ( 8207 Maris Ct., Louisville,KY 40241 email richardwiebke@yahoo.com)he suffered a terrible turn for the worse. Instead of shrinking, his brain tumor, which had metastasized from his lung cancer, had enlarged. It was considered inoperable, but there was no alternative. They removed it. He subsequently suffered 5 strokes on the other side of his brain and the cancer was now in his liver. Dick and Sharon decided he would go home. He is failing and has at most from days to a couple of weeks, only the Good Lord knows. Dick and I grew up in the same neighborhood and were inseparable at SSHS....he was the brother I never had. Our paths continued to cross at both PU and later IU and we even worked at two places together while I was working my way through college. To say Dick is a genuinely good guy/nice guy is an understatement. We had a fairly large class at SS and he had no equals in that regard. I was truly blessed to have been his buddy and will remember him all the days of my life. My prayers go out to his adoring wife Sharon, son Matt, sister Carol and the rest of his family. May the Good Lord bless and keep them all as his suffering on earth ends and he goes to a better place. God bless you Dick, Jim Ridlen

So very sad. Prayers are with his family. Remember this fine person to be simply that. He was kind, quiet and accepting. Our daughter and family live at Lake Wylie, SC also. It's so very interesting how truly small our world is and how our lives continue to be 'entwined'. Mary Crowder McQueen
