In Memory

Stephen J. Smith

Stephen J. Smith

Comments from Steve's MotherAfter graduation from Indiana, Steve entered the army (not exactly willingly) but did well.  He was stationed at Camp Zama outside Tokyo for 18 months working in army intelligence.  WE never did know much of what he did.  Steve came home , worked with Montgomery Ward for awhile then spent many years at Marshall Field which he loved.   He was only sick a few months.  His problem  (liver CA) was found during a routine yearly physical and diagnosed in August of 2006.  He continued to work until mid October when it just got too difficult for him to keep going.  He underwent a therapy that I think was rather new but things were just too far along for it to do any good.  I spent the last week of his life up there with  him in his apartment and he never did have much pain, thank goodness.  Things went bad really fast the last 24 hours and we did get him to the hospital, but he passed away November 27th, 2006.   We held a wake for him in Chicago and I could not believe the number of people who called.  He had been very active in AA and was a mentor to many of the people who visited.  I think he did some good work after all.

I was so sad to read about Stephen's passing.  We were in choir together and I have fond memories of him.  My condolences go out to his family.

I am new to this site and was saddened to note Steve's passing.  I sat behind him in Mrs. Trader's 6th grade class, South Wayne elementary.  I teased him incessantly until we both giggled too much and I got in trouble. Rest in peace Steve.
