THIS IS AN EXCERPT FROM AN EMAIL I SENT TO PAUL'S DAUGHTER, KIMBERLY

""I didn't "know" your Dad, as in we were friends, but I did know who he was, and were were acquainted. I was a cheerleader and Paul was on the Varsity Football team.  He was quite good and made the Varsity squad in his Sophomore year, maybe.  He was a good athlete and was on the Varsity Track team too, as well as being in other intramurals, if I recall.  He was a member of the Letterman's Club and participated in the club's activities.  I remember he was part of the leaders of the Letterman's Christmas Can Drive our Senior year when they broke a record collecting almost 42, 000 cans!  I always thought he had the neatest hair -- now isn't that silly, the things we remember ! Ha!""

THIS IS HER REPLY:

 Hello Nancee,

My Dad had Diabetes since his mid-twenties.  His health was not really good the past ten years.  He went in to the hospital on Jan. 27th for a high heart rate and low blood pressure.  Each day he got worse.  The He had a body scan done the Friday after entering the hospital.  They found Cancer on his Liver and Lungs.  The Doctors really took really good care of him in his last days.  He was a great man with a happy spirit.  He got a job at Premier Engineering in 1977 in Madison Heights, Michigan.  After a few years, GM came in to the shop and hired him as a Senior Design Draftsman.  He worked at GM until he retired as a Design Supervisor around 2000. My Dad was pretty much a Master Chess player, Computer Software designer, Star Trek collector.  He was a very in intelligent man.  He could talk to just about anyone everywhere he went.  He was a great father who loved us dearly.  He was always there for us when we needed him.  We were so honored to have him as Father.  He did get to say Goodbye to us the day before he passed away.  Which made us the luckest four kids alive.  My parents have four children myself, Stephen, Amy and Christine.  My Mom is alive and doing great.  My Mom and Dad were divorced in 1994, they stayed great friends.  Dad remarried a wonderful woman named Chris and they were married in 1995.    Paul's (aka Skip) Mom had made him a scrapbook with every newspaper story about the Football games he played in.  It is really neat to go through.  I don't think I ever heard about him collecting 42,000 cans.  WOW, that is a ton of cans.  I certainly can see him doing that.  He suceeded in everything he did.

I contacted the South Side website last year giving his address in Royal Oak.  We had talked about going to the reunion if he was in good health.  I know he checked out your website many times.  I am surprised he didn't join.

I hope this finds you in good health.

Sincerely,
Kimberly Scheidemantle Houvener
Proud daughter

Paul was a good friend of mine all through school. He attended Harrison Hill Elementary from kindergarten through the 4th grade. When South Calhoun Elementary opened up we had to there for our 5th and 6th grades. Then we went back to Harrison Hill for the remainder years the 7th and 8th grades. Then on to South Side for 4 years. Our class was 568 students strong.
I remember Paul has a very big man about 6'-5" and about 325 lbs. He was the very "gentle giant" with a smile on his face all the time. He was a lot bigger than the rest of us kids, but he was always afraid he would hurt us in just "playing around". Yes he did play football and throw the shotput on the track team. He was part of the group of Lettermen's Club that walked through ice and snow to collect can goods for the Christmas drive. We both lived on the south end of town, south of Pettit Ave. and we covered every street and house in that area. We were very proud of our contribution, because we were organized, talked about the appropriate way to ask for the can goods. I can remember collecting a 6 pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon for a donation, but we said we could not take it to school. The resident said, "It would make somebody happy at Christmas time". We took the donation in, thinking we would get in trouble, but we did not. I wonder whatever happened to the donation. Maybe R. Nelson Snider took it home for the Holiday Season!
I am sure that he will be missed as a leader in your family. At least, you got to say goodbye to him, that is so wonderful. There will not be a day that goes by you will not think of him in various situations that come up in your daily lives. May God Bless You!
