SATURDAY RIVER BOAT TOURS

Revitalization of the riverfront is a top priority, and you haven’t seen our City until you experience it from The River! A Fort Wayne River Authority Historian will Captain a Pontoon Heart of the City"Tour starting at Fort Wayne Outfitters, continue to the confluence of the three rivers, back down the St. Mary’s River to Swinney Park, and loop back to end at Fort Wayne Outfitters. Tours focus on history, and the potential for activity and development along our great rivers. You can find more information on the plans for the Riverfront at http://wane.com/2014/10/29/riverfront-vision-unveiled/

STORYTELLERS AND THEIR STORIES

Sharon Wright

Our 1:30 PM River boat tour was launched under sunny skies and a beautiful Indian summer day. The guide was Dan Wire who piloted the comfy pontoon boat (nothing like the craft I remember from childhood onIndiana lakes with rickety lawn chairs for seats) expertly down the river at a leisurely pace explaining and pointing out the work that is being done to promote the conservation and restoration of the rivers flowing through Ft Wayne. It was fascinating to learn the Maumee River contributes 20% of the water to Lake Erie. Dan took us to the dam and talked about various topics including flood control, water quality, recreational opportunities on and along the river, and efforts to beautify the river banks with plants rather than just rock. Along the way we saw a group of people in kayaks on the river, a few guys fishing, and other people on the trail at the top of the river bank. Dan told us each of the tours he led that day had been unique so there is obviously more to see. I would definitely take the tour again and urge all the local classmates who missed it to do so at the first opportunity.
