Sunday 9th Inning Brunch #1

Sunday Morning:   9th Inning Brunch     September 28th       10:00am-12:30pm

Please finish the Ballgame's 50th Reunion line up by joining us back at PARKVIEW Field  for a hearty ‘Sunday 9th Inning Brunch’ of Scrambled Eggs, Buttermilk Biscuits with Sausage Gravy, Hash Browns, Bacon, Assorted Pastries, Butter, Jellies, Coffee, & Orange Juice for $15.00/person.  We will again be in the Suite Level Lounge to see a re-run of the City’s Skyline in the Morning light, much different from the bright lights of last night. You’re safe at home for a final look at the running DVD Memory videos, a final stretch around Memory Lane, and connecting with those you have missed so far, or take that Tour of the Stadium, if you missed it last night. This Brunch has become a special low key time to relax, and review the Reunion. We pass around the mic as many classmates reflect, tell reunion stories, laugh about things said and done over the weekend, & share ideas as we plan for our next gathering ~ the 55th Reunion

OUR LEAD STORYTELLER & HIS STORY:

South Side High School 50th Reunion

Comments by John (Ned) Stewart at Sunday Brunch

September 28, 2014

*      The idea for this morning—pass the microphone.  People can share stories and comments about the past, the reunion, the website, or just about anything.
*      Nancee asked me to start and be the MC.
*      A reunion brings back memories of one’s schooling (e.g., Indian Village, Harrison Hill, SSHS), career and more.  This reminds me of a short story about the progression of a career.  I will use my own name in the story, but it could be about anyone:

When I graduated from graduate school, I took a job at a large company in Chicago.  In essence, I knew nobody.  I started going by John since that was my official name—it made things easier in the fast-paced big city.  So here is how a career progresses through the years:

Start:  WHO is John Stewart?
Begin to Develop a Good Reputation:  GET John Stewart (for the project)
Can’t Do Everything—Too Many Requests:  GET A John Stewart
Getting Older:  GET A YOUNG John Stewart
After Retirement:  WHO is John Stewart?

*      The reunion was great!  I want to thank Nancee and her team for their hard work, energy, expertise, and passion.
*      The website was wonderful—a great facilitator.  The reunion wouldn’t have happened the way it did without it.

  >     Created excitement
  >    Enabled planning for and administration of activities
  >    Made communication with each other possible.  Provided a way for us to renew old relationships and form new ones.  Appreciated the daily emails, the message forum, and picture sharing.
  >    Allowed us to relive some wonderful moments from the past

**      I will finish with a poem that my dad shared with me, and then I’ll shut up and pass the microphone.

I love a finished speaker
I really truly do
I don't mean one who's polished
I mean one who's through

OUR STORYTELLERS & THEIR STORIES:

Sharon MCEcheran

Brunch on Sunday morning was in the same room as the Saturday Night Party.  This was a lovely large room and I again compliment the Reunion Committee on their choice of venue.  The view from this room is lovely no matter the time of day.  The food was served buffet style and was delicious.  When everyone was finished eating, Binky Beaudway and Nancee Lougheed made some opening remarks and introduced Ned Stewart who acted as emcee.  Ned introduced various people who wanted to speak about the reunion and also about the website for our class.  Our website is still a very unique feature of reunions and other classes are beginning to copy our class.  Several of the speakers commented on how much the website has meant to them in the years since our 45th Reunion.  Both Marvin Zimmerman and Patrick Frazier spoke about the website.

My wife Barbara and I went outside to the bleachers to sit and wait for the fireworks to start.  Our faculty sponsor, Mr. George Davis, asked to sit down beside us to watch the fireworks.  I responded, "ya, Mr. Davis you can sit there in the empty seat."  So, I am watching and enjoying the fireworks, with my arm around my wife, watching the artist's palette of color and the loudness of the elephant guns going off.  Mr. Davis's comment to me "I am sure you are watching the beauty of the fireworks but what I see are the atoms, electrons and the chemicals exploding in the air."  He then stated 8 or 10 chemical terms that made up the ingredients of those fireworks.  I guess once a teacher/educator always a teacher/educator.  No wonder I received a C- in his chemistry class.  Wow, what a learning experience 50 years later

After the incredible Saturday night festivities at Parkview Field, I awoke early Sunday morning, feeling a bit unsettled. Knowing that I  was not only going to be enjoying a scrumptious brunch in the company of some of my" early life friends", but also speaking to all the '64' grads about the impact that the website has had on my life as I know it today. All of the attendees could comment on what it meant to them to be reunited with some of their earliest memories of real friendships, and for me it was much the same. But my story was somewhat different due to the the fact that hooking up with Classmate Connection and Nancee's website, allowed several people from "post high school relationships" to find and then contact me via email. Imagine my surprise and chagrin when one day about 8 months ago, I sat down in front of my computer, and there was a note from an "old flame", and 2 weeks later, another email from an ex-wife that I had not spoken to for 30 years. In both of theses instances, my reaction was to inwardly panic, and the vision that emerged  was  one with my hands wrapped around Nancee's throat. Long story-short, my curiosity got the better of me, and I followed up these intrusions on my life. And in both cases, the outcome was one of extreme blessings! The old flame is now suffering severe health issues, and simply needs a friend to email, now that she is the only one alive in a once large and vibrant family. The ex and her husband needed my help in attaining membership in a church family that they already communed with, but could not officially join due to certain "rules and regs". My participation allowed them to fulfill their dreams, and now the invitation has been extended to  dinner in their home. As of this moment, I am still hesitant to accept their generous invitation, but who knows what the future holds now that we are at the day by day stage of our lives.
Then a third email came about 6 months ago, and this was to prove to be a real "bomb shell".  This was from a relationship that resulted in a pregnancy, and an eventual adoption. The last communication of 44 years ago was not one that inspired continued phone conversations wishing a long and happy life to the other. In fact, just the opposite! So to hear from this individual prompted another vision of: Yes! Once again, I am standing in Nancee's back yard at the edge of Bittersweet Lake with my hands wrapped around her  throat, attempting to "throw her to the fishes".  These visions have since passed, and now I am happy to report that I am a Nancy Kirk devotee. You see, this presented an opportunity for 2 people that at one time, long ago, only wished the other "ill will' and a long unhealthy life; to come together in a successful attempt at forgiveness and reconciliation. With this has come a desire to seek out and possibly reunite with our long lost birth son. Time will tell if we are successful, but we are both thankful for the opportunity provided by the Southside High School class of 1964 website.
In closing, I have to acknowledge someone that has been an extremely positive influence as to whether or not I answered these unsolicited emails. My wife, Dawn , once she realized that no threat was posed, has been very supportive in my dealing with these issues, and even has helped  find websites that would be helpful in locating in tracking down my son. I don't think I could have, or would have been able to do this without her support. She is very special, and I am lucky to have her.

Sue, I did not get to Indian Village but really wanted to see how it looked. I do think the Indian Villagers were well represented at the reunion. In fact they were the classmates I most enjoyed seeing. Many others I could not recall how exactly we knew each other….same classes I guess.
